A good post Andrew. I have one other comment to make, and I hope you accept it in the spirit it is intended, that of consern and safety. Personally I would not place my hand over the ramrod when loading. If your ramrod is not long enough to grasp it in your hand, then get a longer ramrod. I found the drag on a ramrod sticking out beyond the muzzle is insignificant. On my fusil the length is about right, but on the little .32 cal the ramrod does stick out.
